User interface in Games.
Different game's User Interfaces and how they can be comparable
User interfaces : battle royale genre
- FORTNITE
- APEX LEGENDS
- CALL OF DUTY : WARZONE
- PLAYERUNKNOWN'S BATTLEGROUNDS
- H1Z1
The user interface in these games show that in most battle royale games have a similar Ui system
This can be seen in these similarities ;
They are all easy to access, one click of a button and you can open the inventory
All weapons are presented by images to make the player know what weapons there using. Helps players use their inventory quickly
The inventory Ui's are designed to be very time efficient as to encourage the speed of the games as battle royale games tend to be more fast paced than other game genres
None of the inventories tend to take over the whole screen and often they are see-through as to allow the player to keep awareness on other players
User interfaces : horror / survival genre ;
- GEARS OF WAR
- RESIDENT EVIL 2
- SILENT HILL 2
- ALIEN ISOLATION
- PHASMOPHOBIA
The user interface In the horror/survival genre;
The user interface in the covers of these games are very similar, this is presented in the;
Creepy aura of the design of the game covers, designed to creep out the players and 'set the tone'
The fonts of the actual name of the games , they are all fonted creepily or designed unsettling in an attempt to make the player feel more immersed
The covers of every game show an insight into what will actually happen in the game , for example , in the cover of alien: isolation an alien can be seen in the reflection of the helmet of the person, Suggesting what will happen in the game
Why is good UI important?
Good UI is important as it helps the player to know their health, inventory , possibly stamina (if the game has it)
A good user interface doesn’t merely need to look pleasant to the eye, it needs to be understandable and not overwhelm the player. Often UI's guide players.
A common trait in the top 10 best rated UI's in games is that they are all understandable, effective and make a heavy impact on the game
A game's UI plays a heavy impact on setting the tone in the game, a horror game may have an unsettling minimal UI , while a shooter game may have a more advanced UI which can make the player feel more emersed.
A game's UI is incredibly effective when it matches the theme of the game.
My favorite game and its UI mechanics
favourite game - FORTNITE
Systems in Fortnite
- Movement system
- Building system
- Damaging system
Movement system mechanics;
Tactical Sprinting – The Tactical Sprint mechanic is a separate movement to the regular running in Fortnite, Tactical Sprinting allows the player to run faster than regular running for about 5-7 seconds then needs to recharge for about 10 seconds. This mechanic is very important in the movement system as it grants the player movement that is unable to be attained while not Tactical sprinting; for example a test was done and it is seen that you can even jump faster and higher while Tactical sprinting, while also having control over every direction in which you can move.
Mantling – The mantling mechanic in Fortnite is a way for players to climb builds when having no materials or for just convenience. This mechanic allows the player to climb any build, although not being able to shoot while mantling it has its positives; such as being very fast, hard to see, and not wasting materials.
These mechanics encourage players from different skill levels to play the game as mantling and sprinting allow people with little skill or skill in different areas
Shooting system;
Different guns spawn all around the FORTNITE map, it is your job as a player to pick one up;
Ammo is very important in FORTNITE as you need to find ammo, you cant just shoot your gun neverendingly, as common sense as it sounds, you cant shoot without ammo
You must reload after using your full magazine and it usually can vary in time from 5 – 12 seconds
Headshots on players deal significantly more damage than body shots, the closer you are to a player the more damage you will hit for
In zero build players must be hit for 250 damage when they have shield and 150 damage when they don’t to be eliminated
In builds players must be hit for 200 damage when they have shield and 100 damage when they do not have shield.
Why are mechanics important;
Mechanics are important as they make a game what it is, sprinting, mantling , shooting all have common factors that make the game the way it is;
For example something all these mechanics have in common is the fact that they make the game very fast paced and in the right game mode very competitive which is the way Fortnite has always been intended to be played
How does this make the player feel?
This will make the player feel encouraged to try their best, this is because it is in the human brain to try hard when feeling competitive. It will also make the player feel a need to improve themself in the game to beat better people and become way better to reach new heights and feel proud of themselves
