game input devices
modern technology allows you to use multiple different inputs;
controllers and other input devices such as keyboards and mice allow you to play video games, controlling your game with whatever input you decide to use. Both kbm and controller have their advantages and disadvantages, keyboard and mouse is harder to learn but is beneficial due to the amount of keys you can use, being able to customise the way you use it. On the other hand controllers are easier to learn and offer often better aim in games as they only require a single finger on the joystick rather than the whole arm on a mouse which is very beneficial towards keyboard players as if you can use your whole arm to use a mouse you will have mouse control way better than on a joystick on a controller.
There are different types of controllers that are used in gaming, and different types created to specialise in different games,
regular controllers - standard controller that come with your console or bought seperate only consisting of the usual buttons, regular joysticks with little to no customizability. These controllers are most often used by casual gamers just looking to have a fun time while they play video games casually. These controllers have a tendency to break regularly which can be seen as a disadvantage and often times aren't very reliant. These controllers are good for people with a small budget as they are the cheapest controllers usually costing around £30 - £60
Paddle controllers - Paddle controllers are controllers that are more popular for more competitive gamers, this is because they are designed to have more customisable buttons such as 'paddles' on the back of the controllers that can be customised. The reason these controllers are more popular in the competitive scene in gaming is the advantage it allows them as they can now have up to 4 differently customised buttons shortening the advantage keyboard players will have over them. These controllers usually are very expensive often costing anywhere from £125 -£300 not being recommended for children.
In the battle royale genre, different games use different control schemes and inputs, such as Fortnite and Call Of Duty which use different settings to support either keyboard and mouse or controller. The majority of battle royale games in 2024 contain separate controller and keyboard and mouse settings to support different inputs people use and allowing full customizability of the sensitivity's and keybinds. Games such as Fortnite and Call Of Duty contain systems to even out the skill gap often seen between the 2 inputs, this system is called 'Aim Assist' which allows controller players the ability to have their crosshair lock on to the enemy player at a customisable rate if it is nearby the area they can damage, while i said 'lock on' it is very fair and not an unprofessional system due to the fact that controller players have a severe disadvantage in battle royale games as keyboard players have much more accessibility and the ability to have better awareness as they can use their whole hand to aim.
This Aim Assist is also seen in Call Of Duty to support controller players and can be customized in the settings.
As they are both in the same genre of games (battle royale) Fortnite and COD use very similar buttons to control the game on keyboard and on controller, a common trait in battle royale games is that in nearly every game you can use a keyboard WASD are the movement keys, R is the reload key, SPACE BAR is the jump, LEFT CLICK is the shooting bind, RIGHT CLICK is the ads bind.
